Staircase Gallery Wall

October 4, 2018

EEK! I’m so excited to finally share a full look at staircase gallery wall and all the details behind it!

I’ve always been obsessed with photos and photography, which is clearly what drew me into blogging. This is the third gallery wall we have in our home, and it is my favorite. This is now actually my favorite part of the house. It makes me happy the 502 times I walk up and down our stairs throughout the day. #momlife

We have lived with our stairwell walls empty for over 5 years. I knew I wanted a huge floor to ceiling gallery wall for this space, but I was overwhelmed by the project. And not sure if we could pull it off. And I couldn’t find any inspiration on the internet or Pinterest for a stairwell like we have. Once I posted a peek at our finished gallery walls on Instagram, I got lots of feedback that you guys have similar stairwells in your house. So I am hoping this can help inspire your project!

In approaching our stairwell gallery walls, the first thing stopping me forward was where on earth to buy the frames. We ultimately decided to go with custom framing them through Framebridge and am so glad we did! Scroll down for a full look at the space and all the details. xo

My vision for our stairwell was modern coastal. So I chose a beachy, natural woven light shade. I didn’t want all the frames to match but I wanted the overall feel to be white, light, and bright.

My first hesitation for this project was where to get the frames. For such a large scale project, even cheapie frames can add up and get pricey. And the problem was none of the reviews on the cheapie frames were very good. IKEA used to carry such amazing gallery wall frames at such a good price, but they recently switched out their glass for a flimsy material and I am not a fan. The gallery frames at Target had reviews that they were broken upon delivery, and the frames at Pottery Barn weren’t sized large enough. Then I connected with Framebridge.

Custom framing used to be so expensive, where a project of this scale would have been crazy expensive. Framebridge is an online custom framing source, and their pricing is phenomenal. I had ordered a few custom frames prints through Framebridge prior to this project, and I was always blown away by how beautiful of a job they do. The turnaround is fast, the packaging is beautiful, and they even provide hanging materials customized to the size of your artwork.

The amazing thing is Framebridge now sells gallery walls. You can check out all their options here! We went with the organic gallery wall in white which is a mix of 5 different frame styles. We also decided to switch up how we matted the frames so there was variation in type of mat, and also photos without a mat. This kept the feel of the gallery wall more modern and current.

I wish I had an easy answer for how to set up an organic style gallery wall, especially in a space like this. I can only say it is best to go in with a plan. But honestly as you go along, you will have to make choices which feel right after eyeballing the space. We started by measuring our walls. Deciding on a border where frames would not go up, below, or past. We kept the spacing between photos loose, but tried to keep it consistently 2-3 inches apart but sometimes it got as large as 5. You can see from the images some of the frames that are like a series are set closer together. The cool thing about Framebridge is you can play around with their gallery walls online, adding your photos to see what they look like in the grouping.

And here’s a peek at what our staircase currently looks like for fall. I am all about keeping holiday decorations simple and understated. The kids go crazy over this cheapie Target skull. You can’t really see from the photos because of the light streaming in from the window, but we have cobwebs and spiders on the right side of the wall. Tis the season. 🙂
