Living Room Refresh

September 17, 2018

Picking out a new sofa can be just as hard as buying a car… am I right? I mean your couch is one of the places you spend most of your time- besides your bed so it’s important! We had been in the market to get a new couch for a while now, but I was debating on whether we should go with a sectional (to keep it easy and family friendly) OR a combination sofa + chair (to please the designer in me!).

We previously had a big, bulky sectional (see it here) so I was leaning towards a sofa and chair combo. Also, despite having a big sectional that my family could comfortably spread out on, we were all piling on one side of the couch and not using the chaise. At all.

I’ve always wanted a reading chair/ space in my living room, and when I saw the Jonathan Louis Nikki Settee … really, there was no turning back. I am head over heels in love with that chair. Once I had the chair selected, I wanted a coordinating sofa that had clean lines and a transitional feel so we selected the Windsor Estate Sofa. I just love the wooden legs and clean lines!

I am extremely picky about sofas since like I said we do spend a significant amount of time on them. It’s a place where we do a lot of relaxing and family bonding. I LOVE Jonathan Louis upholstery for several reasons. Their furniture is made either in California or Mexico. They have the ability to customize and offer a TON of different fabrics (see all the options here!).

I’ve made mistakes in the past with purchasing items that aren’t kid friendly (note to self dining chairs or barstools that aren’t wipeable are a no). You might see all this white furniture and think it is the OPPOSITE of kid-friendly. We have a 5 year old boy, and how can I possibly keep all this white furniture looking clean? Enter Jonathan Louis’
“justlive™ fabric options. The sofa and chair are both upholstered in kid-friendly washable, durable fabric. I didn’t even look at fabrics that weren’t washable and kid-friendly, and Jonathan Louis has some beautiful options that are very washable. To remove a spot of dirt, I use a damp warm washrag and gently scrub it out.

I didn’t want to use the same exact fabric for both the sofa and settee because that would feel too matchy. Also, I feel like the Nikki Settee looks best with a fabric that has movement and texture. For the Windsor Estate Sofa, I went with Peyton Pearl which is a soft white. And we chose Dover Natural for the Nikki Settee. It may be hard to tell from the photos, but the settee fabric has a dark thread woven into the fabric.

Our previous sectional also had a texture, but it was also very uncomfortable against the skin. Both fabrics we selected are SO SOFT… especially the sofa! A day or two after receiving the sofa, I laid down on it with the intention to just rest my eyes for a minute… next thing I knew this turned into a full fledged nap with tons of stuff going on around the house and all the lights still on. I have a hard time napping so this was amazing! The sofa is just so darn comfy.

I don’t know about you guys, but I am pumped to decorate for the holidays. When I designed our living room space, I purposefully kept it neutral so changing the decor and accessories for the seasons would be a snap. My preferred aesthetic is white, clean, cozy, and bright so it works! 🙂 We live in Southern California, and my vibe is modern coastal, using organic elements and textures to achieve the look.

I’ll admit the living room isn’t completely done. My intention is to layer a neutral, vintage rug over the textured jute rug. But it will take some time tracking down the right one, in the right size for the space. It took me WEEKS just to settle on a jute rug. P.S. We LOVE ours, and it’s a steal. And don’t even ask how long it took me to decide on which sofa to order through Jonathan Louis. They have a HUGE selection!

At some point I want to switch out our coffee table for something a little less… big. 😉 The bright side is I can hide a bunch of stuff inside the trunk like pillows and heavy blankets. The other side of our living room has our fireplace and built-in media center which are both works in progress.

Do you ever feel like house projects are never done? I have a love/ hate relationship with the process. But I imagine if I didn’t have any house projects to work on, I would feel bored.
